No. 7 . that's where Forbes magazine ranking's put Boise on its list of up-and-coming tech cities. Their write up included: Since the 1970s, chip maker Micron Technology and computer giant Hewlett-Packard, along with the Idaho National Laboratory, had buoyed Boise's technology sector. But now there are new faces. In 2006, Idaho ranked seventh nationally in the percentage increase in venture capital investments and 11th in concentration of high-tech workers. One home-grown start-up, Quantum Point Technologies, provides a suite of information-technology management services to agencies at the U.S. Department of the Interior and regional businesses like Washington Trust Bank. The facility offers a therapy center and design elements that promote healing. Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center officially opened a new floor for orthopaedic and joint surgery patients in the hospital's Central Tower on Monday. "The environment is now safer, more comfortable and spacious for our doctors, staff and patients," said Sandra Bruce, president and CEO. "It will no doubt translate into even higher clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. We now have the absolute best of both worlds."   Saint Alphonsus was ranked as No. 1 in Idaho for the past three years in overall orthopaedic services by HealthGrades, an independent company that analyzes patient outcomes from 5,000 hospitals nationwide. The Boise hospital performed about 7,000 orthopaedic surgeries last year.   "No one does this alone," said Dr. Richard Moore, orthopaedic surgeon and department chair.   He credits the hospital's continued achievements to a philoso...

The Meridian City Council approved a zoning change for a planned lifestyle center, Meridian Town Center, last night. CenterCal Properties plans to build 500,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, entertainment and office space at the corner of Eagle Road and Fairview Avenue. Site plans call for 24 buildings, one of which appears to be a gym, and some of which would have office or housing above retail. The lifestyle center would be next to a 60-acre park and a residential component. "Meridian and the Treasure Valley are ideally suited for a lifestyle center, and currently there is no such project available in the area," CenterCal Director of Development Andy Wilk said. "A combination of strong demographics and local growth, enjoyable climate and quality of life is a perfect fit for a lifestyle center." CenterCal's project is one of two announced in western Ada County last year. Poag & McEwen plans to build The Shops at Lakemoor on Eagle Road near Chinden Boulevard in Eagle...

Decorate holiday lighting is increasingly being used year-round to brighten homes and businesses.  To reduce energy costs, consider replacing traditional incandescent holiday lights with Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. LED lights: Save Energy. LED lights use just 0.08 watts per bulb compared to 0.48 watts for an incandescent mini-light and six watts for a larger incandescent C7 bulb. Last longer. LED's epoxy lenses makes them very durable. They are rated for up to 100,000 hours or more when used indoors, and up to 50,000 hours for outdoor use.  Some manufacturers even provide a limited lifetime warranty. Reduce Risk. LEDs do not get hot like incandescent bulbs. This reduces the risk of combustion since the bulbs are cool to touch, regardless of how long they are left on. To encourage the use of LED technology among commercial customers, such as businesses, cities and counties, Idaho Power offered a pilot incentive program this holiday season. Ince...
