Washington Group International (WGI) along with Hewlett-Packard, Simplot, and Micron fall under the agribusiness and high-tech companies who all benefit from the international marketplace.  WGI's exporting presence and benchmarking techniques are seen in the following countries: Middle East and Russia and their expertise in the power and oil/gas sectors; Canada and the United Kingdom with their environmental management and remediation skills and technologies; Canada, Germany, Mexico, Bolivia, and Jamaica with their mining expertise; Egypt, Brazil, Australia, Switzerland, Russia, and the United Kingdom with improving manufacturing and industrial plant efficiencies; and China with strengths in project management, safety, and training.  In the international competition Thomas Friedman describes it, "flat," Treasure Valley companies will encounter more competition.  The United States decline in math and science is at its opportune time to focus its en...

Boise's downtown is growing rapidly with residential developments. Currently there are eleven new developments in the proposal stage or being built within the downtown core.  What does this mean for Boise's development? More construction development and business opportunities. But what about the residents who are trying to sleep, but are awaken by music or loud people walking the streets early in the morning? City ordinance is working on benchmarking other cities such as: San Francisco, New York, Salt Lake City, and Seattle and possibly integrating it into Boise's ordinance.  This is an exciting time for Boise's current and future development, but at the same time presents challenges for current and future residents, businesses, and the city.  As ordinances are being evaluated Boise will continue with current developments. On March 1st the Meridian Water Department will begin its annual Water Flushing Program.  It is expected to take four weeks.  The Flush Program cleans natural sediments that are not a human health threat, but can clog water lines if not removed. There may be a temporary change in your tap water from clear to a red, brown, or black color.  If this occurs simply run cold-water faucets in bathtubs at full stream for a few minutes until the water is clean.  Before you open any hot-water taps it is important to clear the cold-waterline. Also, check clothes washer and ice makers for sediments. If plugging occurs remove screens from faucets and rinse,.  Temporary pressure may also occur. For more information call the Meridian Water Department, 208-888-5242.
