Source: FEMA and the US Fire Administration A major contributing factor in residential fires is the use of wood burning stoves and space heaters. Many of these fires can be prevented. Here are some winter heating tips to keep in mind during the cold months: Wood Stoves and Fireplaces Be sure the fireplace or wood stove is installed properly. Wood stoves should have adequate clearance of 36 inches from combustible surfaces and proper floor support and protection. Wood stoves should be UL listed, solid construction and good quality. Have the chimney inspected annually and cleaned if necessary, especially if not used in quite a long time. Check the outside chimney for cracks or loose bricks. All unused flue openings should be sealed with solid masonry. Do not use flammable liquids to start or rekindle any fire. Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace opening to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out and to help prevent burns to your ho...

Phoenix is the city most at risk for identity fraud, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. Their new survey shows writing a check is not safer than banking online because of a scam called "check washing." The thief erases the ink on a check, fills in whatever he wants, and cleans out your bank account. But never fear. Where there's a scam like check fraud, there's sure to be a company with a profitable solution. Uni-Ball makes a pen filled with a specially formulated ink that can't be washed off. It comes in several elegant designs, for the sophisticated check-writer. Source: National Public Radio

Too many small-business owners think marketing is like a trip to the dentist - something you just gotta do every six months or so. But when marketing is continuous and targeted rather than occasional and shotgun, business gets easier. If prospects have a positive view of your wares and reputation before you call or before they start shopping, you're that much closer to nailing a sale. The next news flash is that ongoing marketing isn't tied to a price tag. It's defined only by putting the right message in front of the right person at the right time. Here are 10 ideas for doing that - on the cheap. 1. Take steps to make customers feel special. Customers respond to being recognized, especially in these rush-rush, get-the-lowest-price times. "Even with a Web-based business, good customer service is possible," says Denise McMillan, co-owner of Plush Creations (www.plushcreations.com), an on...

1. Rake, rattle and roll! Convince yourself that raking leaves can be fun. Rather than wait for a single weekend, break this chore into stages. Matted leaves can lead to insect and disease problems and smother your turf, especially cool season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass.   2. To fertilize - or not to fertilize? Cool season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass, fescues and perennial ryegrass often need fertilizer this time of year. Grasses that go dormant in the winter, such as Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede may not. Visit www.lowes.com for information on soil testing and choosing the right fertilizer.   3. Repair and re-seed. Fall is a great time to repair a damaged lawn and re-seed. Fill any holes or bare spots with topsoil and add grass seed. It's important to choose the right kind of grass for your growing zone; go to www.lowes.com to learn what's best for your area.   4. Don't forget to water. New grass in particular needs frequent but shal...
